IFW | With increasing digitalisation, production industry has to deal with more and more incidents of cybercrime. Causes and effects of cyberattacks on production systems and how companies can protect their facilities are researched at IFW.

In production industry, digitalisation is a blessing and a curse at the same time. Interconnected machines provide higher productivity, improved quality and tailored products. But at the same time, machines and systems become targets of cyberattacks with manifold effects ranging from the complete breakdown of a machine to productivity and quality losses to data theft.

The aim of the research project "IT security in production" is the risk assessment of different attack scenarios and the identification of appropriate protective measures. The Institute of Production Engineering and Machine Tools (IFW) and their project partners are testing different scenarios of cyberattacks in a closed network consisting of machine control, virtual process simulation and network monitoring.

With this test environment, the researchers want to raise interested persons' awareness of IT security: In live demonstrations, their aim is to show the effects of successful cyberattacks and the corresponding protective measures.
