IPH | The IPH employee Benjamin Küster won the first prize of the Jungheinrich Excellence Awards for his master thesis. The aim of his work was to develop a gesture recognition system for gesture control of automated guided vehicles (AGV).
With the Excellence Awards, Dr. Friedrich Jungheinrich Foundation wants to promote young academics studying MINT subjects to honour outstanding talents for their master thesis. This year’s first prize went to Benjamin Küster, project engineer at the Institut für Integrierte Produktion Hannover gGmbH (IPH), for his master thesis on the “development of a real-time gesture recognition system based on a skeletal model“. An integrated 3D camera allows the system to recognize gestures in real-time mode. Via gestures, the operator can assign an AGV transport tasks – for example a forklift in a storehouse. Gesture recognition is based on a skeletal model.
Küster studied Industrial Engineering at Leibniz Universität Hannover and wrote his master thesis at IPH. Since November 2014, the 27-year old is working as project engineer and doctoral candidate at the institute.
